Terms of Service

Welcome to GRead! We are so happy to have you here, and we hope you enjoy using this site. We do not have many rules, but the rules that we do have, we require that everybody follow:

  • You are not allowed to post spam. This includes the following:
    • Links to other websites (exceptions can be made for links that are shared in response to a request, or when an administrator gives permission)
    • Links to any website that contains the following are strictly prohibited:
      • Political activism
      • Requests for donations (including crowdfunding websites)
      • Pornography
      • Violent content
      • Content that goes against the core values of GRead and its members
  • This website is kept alive by user contributions, and we encourage everybody to join, add the books that they are reading, and share their thoughts with others. However, we have certain restrictions on what kind of books we accept in the database, and we ask that you do not submit anything that would fall under the following categories:
    • Erotica, including graphic novels/comics.
      • This does not include all books that have instances of people engaging in sexual activities.
      • Books that feature sex as a central theme of the story are prohibited.
    • Calendars
      • They have ISBNs, but nobody reads calendars.
    • Audiobooks
      • Audiobooks are given ISBNs, but one cannot read a CD.
    • Maps, atlases, etc.
      • These are books, they have ISBNs, but they do not fit in with the purpose of the website.
    • Books that are not written in English
      • While we hope to include non-English books in the future, for the time being, we do not wish to include such books in the database.
  • We want to keep GRead open to people. We do not get involved in what people say on GRead, but we do have some basic rules that we require members to follow in order to use GRead:
    • We do not allow excessive use of profanity. The administrators determine what is, and what is not, excessive.
    • We do not allow political campaigning.
    • We do not allow political speech in member bios.
      • This includes pronouns, sexual preference, political slogans, political acronyms, etc.
    • We do not allow threats, glorifying violence, calling for violence, or “hoping that x happens to y”.
    • We do not allow the use of racial epithets, nor do we allow the use of any language that is designed to insult others based on their race, sex, nationality, or appearance.
    • We do not allow dating, flirting, etc.
    • We do not tolerate any sort of comment, review, or post that judges the viewpoint/work of an author/user based on their race, sex, or nationality.
    • We welcome open discussion and debate about ideas, but we do not allow for members to insult others. You may attack an idea, but you may not attack members.
  • We do not prohibit members from having another account, but we do prohibit members from creating alternate accounts to artificially inflate their points, statistics, groups, etc.
  • You are allowed to use certain language, and to discuss certain subjects, that would otherwise be prohibited, as long as you are doing so within a discussion of a book.
    • For example:
      • “Karl Marx is incorrect in the things he wrote about in the Communist Manifesto.” would be acceptable, given that it is a comment made about what a specific author said in his book.
      • “Karl Marx says the same thing that liberals are saying today.” would not be allowed, given that the statement discusses politics in a way that exceeds the scope of the book.
    • This also includes quoting books that make use of words that are widely viewed as offensive. We allow for free discussion of the books on this website, and we do not place any restrictions of what is quoted. If the book is on the website, you are able to quote it.
  • We do not permit any discussion of where to read or obtain unreleased books.
  • We do not permit any discussion of where to read or obtain pirated books.
  • We cannot verify every members’ reading, but we ask that you do not mark books as “complete” unless you have actually read them. We rely upon trust in our members, and this requires that members are honest about what they have read.
  • We do not allow maliciously reviewing a book. This does not prohibit members from being critical of books. This rule prohibits users from reviewing a book with the sole purpose of harming its average rating.
  • You may not impersonate other members, administrators, or public figures.
  • You may not intentionally slow down the website. This includes abusing the ISBN importer form, flooding the website with traffic, etc.
    • We do not tolerate any attacks on our website/host. Anybody who attempts to DDoS our website will be reported to the authorities.

We also have a few things that we wish to let you know:

  • We reserve the right to remove any book, any user, any group, and any post. We do not need to provide an explanation, though, we probably will give a reason, anyway.
  • We have the final say over what does, and what does not, meet the standards of the website.
